Engagement Coordinators Seek Participation

Rebekah Becker and Marvin Mitchell II, the Coordinators of Student Engagement, stressed how impactful intermural and student engagement can be on college kids.
The intermural sand volleyball games started last week. They were supposed to be played on Thursdays and Sundays from 4-6 p.m. Only two teams who have signed up so there are currently no games being played Sundays.
Becker focuses on intermural sports while Mitchell’s focus is on SGA and CAP.
Mitchell talked about why students should start coming out for intermural sports and events saying, “Athletes can get so tied into their sports sometimes they forget to have fun. Once outside of college, people realize it was a lot of fun.”
Beckers’ answer to why students should participate, “They can make better connections with people outside your team and school.”
When talking about one of the upcoming events, watching the new movie Twisters outdoors Becker said, “It’s a one-time opportunity, I never got to watch the movie Twisters outside.”
One of the reasons for the lack of participation could simply be because of how busy everyone is getting ready for their respective sports.
Another could be because of “backlash from some players and their coaches.” The response to this is that Becker is planning more “Low impact activities”. She hopes of gaining more participation and assuring everyone’s safety.
These low impact activities that are currently planned include the outdoor movie night and a capture the mattress. Becker is excited about this event where KWU students will take on students from KSU-Salina.
There is also a silent disco planned for Friday at 7:30 in Muir Gym. There is currently a sign-up available for a pickleball day as well. Becker hopes to set up a murder mystery night in the near future. She also mentioned the idea of a dodgeball tournament.
Becker, who has worked at Kansas Wesleyan for a mere three weeks is still, in her words, “finding what works best”. She is using a new website that tracks sign-ups for activities or events. She says this is easier than handwritten sign-up sheets of the past.

Marvin Mitchell II is also in his first year as Coordinator of Student Engagement. He was a student here and an RA for several years and brings an experienced perspective.
Students can learn about these future events and opportunities to connect with more students by checking their student emails regularly. Becker and Mitchell are always notifying students of what is being planned at KWU.
