Kansas Wesleyan University (KWU) E-Sports arena is making waves with its flexible hours and open-door policy. According to Matt Weis, the arena operates whenever a team captain or coach is present. Students can easily tell if the arena is open for use. “If the door is open and the lights are on, you’re welcome to come in,” Weis added. This simple system eliminates confusion and encourages spontaneous gaming sessions. The arena prides itself on being open to all students, promoting a sense of community among gamers across different majors and years. However, there are specific times when access is limited. During closed practice hours for the college’s E-Sports teams, the arena is off-limits to non-team members. These practice times vary, but students can stay informed by checking the team’s Discord channel, which serves as the primary communication platform for arena-related information.

The arena offers a variety of popular games for students to enjoy. The current list includes well-known titles like League of Legends, Fortnite, Rainbow 6 Siege, Call of Duty, Tekken, Street Fighter, Valorant, Overwatch, Rocket League, FIFA, MADDEN, and Super Smash Bros. There’s good news for gaming enthusiasts too, new games can be added to this list after consideration.

One of the most student-friendly aspects of the arena is that it’s completely free to use. This policy ensures that financial constraints don’t prevent any student from participating in the gaming community. While the arena provides high-quality gaming equipment, students also have the option to bring their own gear. “You can bring your own keyboard, controller, mouse, and headset,” Weis stated. However, they also cautioned that students who choose to bring their own equipment are responsible for their safekeeping.

The arena serves as both a recreational space and a training ground for the college’s E-Sports teams. Team practices are scheduled after classes to avoid conflicts with academic schedules. During these times, the arena is closed to non-team members. Again, the main way to check if the arena is open is through the team’s Discord channel

To maintain a positive environment, the arena has established a set of rules, which are displayed on the front door. The college takes these rules seriously, with a system in place for addressing violations. “Failing to follow rules will result in warnings,” Weis noted, “and continued offenses will result in punishments decided by the school.”

While the arena doesn’t currently host tournaments, there are exciting plans on the horizon. “Events are planned to be open to not only non-team members but also the outside public,” said Weis, hinting at the potential for larger gaming events in the future.
