KWU’s Extremely short thanksgiving break

After multiple public interviews, and many conversations with students across the school, one could assume that Kansas Wesleyan’s Break system is extremely odd and doesn’t make much sense at all. For starters, in years previously, Kansas Wesleyan’s Thanksgiving break has always been short, usually only 3-5 days. However, to make up for this, they have a considerably
long fall break in October that usually consists of a full week. This year their break schedule looks much more odd and there’s truly no rhyme or reason for it. Fall break, was essentially a 3 day weekend. Students got Saturday Sunday and Monday off however most athletes reported for practice on Monday, so it really wasn’t a break at all. This looks very different than there week long break they had in previous years that was usually from Monday to Monday. One student stated in a public interview “I live far away, Oregon to be exact, Travelling home after a month and a half of school is really nice because it splits school up perfectly. It allows me to also lock back in knowing I wont get to go home for Thanksgiving. This year, I didn’t have enough time to go home due to the 4 day break we had and on top of that they didn’t lengthen Thanksgiving break so I really didn’t understand the change. To add onto all of this, we get out for Christmas at the same time as well”. Another student stated “It just sucks they didn’t give us a week break for either because I did have to fly home and chose to miss crucial class time to see my family and friends”. School is important but all you have is family, and not being able to go home for fall break did kind of make me home sick. I hope things can change in the future because it is really frustrating to truly not have a break until Christmas”. Students as a whole are very disappointed and I think Kansas Wesleyan recognized this. This next coming academic year they’re switching to a more traditional form of breaks reflecting what Wichita or Kansas states would look like. Hopefully this is the change students need to be able to come back energized and ready to learn. Boosting a schools GPA and overall happiness is never a bad thing and if giving students a few extra days off class is the way to that so be it.
