Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month

Many people don’t know when Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month is. It is celebrated during different months in different places around the world. Here at Kansas Wesleyan, the baseball team celebrates it in November by coming together to bring awareness to this important cause.
Movember
Their efforts began when Coach Bret Ringer challenged everyone on the team to “Change some part of your face.” They did this to change something about themselves to see themselves in a different way. So, at the beginning of November, every member of the team shaved off whatever type of facial hair they currently had. They did this to change something about themselves. Some people refer to this as Movember
One of the main reasons they did this was to have people ask them why they shaved. This, in turn, would create a bigger awareness for men’s mental health.
Reaching Out
Men’s mental health should be on everyone’s mind year-round. Men often don’t reach out for help when they need it.
The National Institute of Mental HealthTrusted Source and American Foundation for Suicide Prevention are great resources for those struggling with their mental health. They are also good places for people to learn more.
Salina Mission Rescue
The other thing the baseball team did was have a fundraiser for the Salina Rescue Mission. The Rescue Mission has many programs aimed at rescuing and restoring homeless men’s lives. They have shelter for men 18 years or older. There is also a guest employment program to help men get a job so they can save up some money. They have their own mental and medical health programs for any issues that the men may have.
As a team, the Coyotes were able to raise $700 dollars. And a few of the baseball members, along with Coach Bret Ringer, hand delivered it to the executive director, Chad Young.
Young was extremely thankful for the money that was raised. Then he talked a little about the importance of what they do. He said, “Every person gets three meals a day, seven days a week; our kitchen is open 24/7.” He also said, “We have showers for men and women who can use them at anytime.” He also talked about the importance of the mission because it’s the only complete shelter “north of McPherson until Nebraska and only one west until Colorado.”
The Mission is located at 1716 Summers Rd. This is their website link where anyone can find out more about what they do. They accept donations at the website.
