Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries are among the most common injuries athletes face, particularly in high-impact sports like football, soccer, and basketball. ACL injuries can leave a lasting effect on an athlete’s physical, mental, and emotional performance.
For most athletes, recovering from ACL injury is a grueling 6-12-month process. Surgery to reconstruct the torn ligament is followed by months of physical therapy aimed to restore strength, flexibility, and stability.
Kiara Arcasi, a flag football player from Kansas Wesleyan University, is in the process of making her return to the field, just four months after undergoing ACL surgery. Having suffered a quad graft, Arcasi faced significant muscle loss, particularly in her quadriceps and hamstrings. “Mentally, watching my quad shrink was tough,” she reflected. “But I know the only person who can change this is me. If I want to get back to where I was, I have to put in the work.” Despite the physical setbacks, Arcasi’s determination has been unwavering. She was motivated to start physical therapy immediately after surgery, eager to get ahead of her recovery and avoid feeling “stuck.” As she works on rebuilding strength and regaining muscle, she emphasizes the mental and physical toll of the recovery process. “It’s a mind game,” she admitted. “Every day is a grind, but I know I’m doing this for my future on the field.”
During a recent discussion with Thomas Meuli (DPT), he provided valuable insights on reducing the risk of ACL tears. He emphasized the importance of strengthening the hips, particularly the gluteus medius, and highlighted the significance of mastering proper jumping and landing techniques. One key message he would share with all ACL patients is the importance of patience throughout the recovery process. According to Meuli, healing takes time, and while it’s natural to want to accelerate progress, the body’s recovery cannot be rushed.
Recovering from an ACL injury is tough, requiring both physical effort and mental strength. Athletes like Kiara Arcasi prove that with consistent work and a solid rehab plan, full recovery is possible. Experts like Thomas Meuli highlight the importance of prevention and proper rehab to avoid future injuries. While the process can be challenging, the right mindset and guidance help athletes overcome setbacks and return stronger.
