Fallon Food Reviews: Taqueria Fresnillo

Written by on February 20, 2025

Howdy y’all! I’m Jacob Fallon, and in this weekly series, we’ll explore different locally owned restaurants in the Salina, Kansas area. We’ll rate each establishment on price, service, and taste, using a 1-10 scale (1 being the worst, 10 being the best). By the end of the semester, we’ll determine the best locally owned restaurant in Salina.

Before we dive in, I create TikTok and Instagram videos reviewing these places and more! Follow me: @fallonfoodreviews on both platforms.

This week, we’re spotlighting Taqueria Fresnillo, a small Mexican restaurant located at 211 W Cloud Street. I visited during their “Taco Tuesday” special, offering $1.50 street tacos.

Before my visit, I inquired about the restaurant from others. I heard praises like “good for the price,” “it’ll blow your socks off,” and even claims of it being the best in Salina. My coach recommended it, and the enticing Taco Tuesday deal sealed the deal.

Here’s the review: I ordered two street tacos, bringing my total to around $3.41 – definitely budget-friendly. I opted for ground beef and chicken, though they also offer pork and other meats.

Back at the dorm, I sampled the chicken taco first (without any added sauces to experience the base flavor). The chicken was slightly dry, which slightly detracted from the overall taste. The other components were flavorful, but the dryness of the chicken brought down the score. As a Texan with high taco standards, I wasn’t completely blown away. I rated the chicken taco a 6.75/10.

Next, I tried the ground beef taco, which I was less excited about initially, preferring chicken. However, this taco surprised me. It was incredibly flavorful and the balance of ingredients was perfect. I gave it a 9/10. It surpassed the chicken taco significantly and was truly impressive, especially for the price and location.

I shared my experience with friends and asked their opinions. They generally enjoyed the tacos. I interviewed Cohen Fahey, who has extensive experience with Mexican cuisine from his travels. He commented, “For being in the middle of Kansas, they were very good.” Fahey rated the tac

os a 6.4/10, acknowledging he’s had better street tacos elsewhere. He, like me, tried the chicken taco, but instead of ground beef, he opted for adobada.

To summarize:

  • Service: 4.25/10. Service was generally good, but the tacos took a bit longer than expected, and there was a order mix-up with a friend.
  • Price: 10/10. $1.50 tacos are unbeatable.
  • Taste: 7.88/10.

Overall Score: 7.4/10.
