What KWU Students did for the Super Bowl

Written by on February 20, 2025

Last week, we took a look at what students were looking forward to for the Super Bowl. We also looked at the bigger impact it has than just a football game. That article can be found here: Edit Post “The Super Bowl: More than a Game” ‹ KWUStudentMedia — WordPress

This week here at KWU Student Media, we’re going to look at how the game played out. We will also look at what stood out besides the game itself. And finally, how some KW students celebrated the game.

The Big Game

In an absolute onslaught, the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Kansas City Chiefs by a final score of 40-22. Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts threw for 221 yards and 2 touchdowns, rushed for 72 yards and another touchdown, and was the game’s MVP.

The Eagles defense dominated and considerably slowed down Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, leading him to throw for two interceptions. The pure domination stopped the Chiefs from becoming the first team ever to three-peat.

Everything Else

Besides the game, there are many other talking points to bring up when it comes to the Super Bowl. In last week’s article, KWU Student Media also looked at the commercials and halftime show as big talking points that draw people in to watch the big game.

Many commercials were a big hit, as they are each year. Some 30-second ads cost up to $8 million. According to an article, some of the best-reviewed and popular commercials were by Michelob Ultra, Google, and Instacart. While some of the worst-reviewed commercials included Coffee Mate, Tubi, and ChatGPT. You can find the entire rankings list here: The best and worst Super Bowl commercials of 2025

The Main Show

One of the other big talking points that surrounds the Super Bowl each year is the halftime performance. This year was no different. Recent Grammy award-winning artist Kendrick Lamar performed in New Orleans this year.

Many people talked more about the halftime show than the game itself because the game turned out to be a big blowout. After winning five Grammys in recent weeks, Lamar once again dominated the music world with his “controversial halftime show.” He performed his diss track “Not Like Us,” which accuses fellow rapper Drake of various allegations. Also, during the performance, a protester, part of the field cast, unveiled a flag combining Sudanese and Palestinian symbols. This unsanctioned act led to the individual’s removal and a lifetime ban from NFL events. The NFL clarified that this protest was not part of the planned production.

How Students Celebrated

Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s look at how KW students enjoyed the day. Senior Beau Grant enjoyed the day by hosting friends, grabbing some appetizers, and watching the game. He also talked about how people who don’t necessarily enjoy football enjoy other things like the halftime show. Grant said, “I think Kendrick Lamar did a good job, so people can tune in for that.”

He also said, “The commercials obviously are huge in the Super Bowl, although I didn’t think they stood out from other years. He also pointed out all the celebrities at the event, saying, “It’s more of a social event with football being played.”
