Intramural Basketball at KWU

The final intramural activity of the school year at Kansas Wesleyan University took place last week, as students from KWU and K-State Salina competed in a one-day, 2v2 basketball tournament over spring break.
With many students that had signed up away for the week, the participation was lower than expected. This led to a smaller but competitive field of players. Because of the lower turnout, the tournament directors had to shuffle up the matchups for the first round but those who participated engaged in a fun, competitive environment.
Unlike previous years, where intramural basketball followed a 5v5 or 3v3 format spread out over multiple days, this year’s event was condensed into a single day, featuring two-on-two matchups.
The tournament saw a mix of Kansas Wesleyan and K-State Salina students, creating a cross-campus competition. In the 2v2 format, players had to rely more on quick decision making, passing, and individual scoring ability. Most teams used a pick-and-roll strategies to create scoring opportunities.
Games were played in a half-court setting, which added to the intensity. With only two players per team, there were no subs. Each player had to be locked in on both offense and defense for every possession.
A few standout teams emerged early in the tournament, showing strong team chemistry and shot making.
For the students who participated, the tournament was a fun way to break up spring break and enjoy some competitive basketball. “It was fun, I had to stay here for spring break, so basketball was a fun way to get out of the house” said Thalen Wright, a participate in the tournament. “I liked the 2v2 format, it was fast-paced and you really had to be in shape,” said Wright.
The basketball tournament marked the final intramural event of the school year, capping off a season that included ping pong, soccer, and volleyball. While this year’s basketball event had a different feel due to the condensed format and lower participation, it still delivered memorable moments and gave students a chance to showcase their skills.
With the close of basketball, the 2024 intramural season officially came to a close. While the event may not have been as large as previous years, it still provided an opportunity for students to compete, stay active, and build connections through sports.
