Wednesdays with Skylar: A Day in the Library with KWU’s School Dog

Written by on March 28, 2025

Every Wednesday, students at KWU are treated to a special visitor in the library: Skylar, the school dog. Skylar, a trained dog who spends her days around campus, is a familiar and beloved face to many. As the president’s dog, she is a constant presence, mostly hanging out in the Student Development office, but every Wednesday, she takes a break to hang out with students in the library.

This is Skylar’s second year at KWU, and even though she’s trained, she can’t help but get excited when she’s surrounded by students. Her playful energy is contagious, and she loves to interact with anyone who is willing to give her attention.

I had the chance to spend a Wednesday afternoon with Skylar during study hall, where my flag football team and I were working. We were all beyond excited to have Skylar with us in the library that day. True to her nature, she was running around, wagging her tail, and soaking up all the love. Her energy and enthusiasm made the study session much more enjoyable, as we couldn’t stop laughing at her antics.

But the fun didn’t end there. As we wrapped up our study hall session and began to head out, Skylar darted out the door. She had bolted before we could catch her, and it quickly turned into a mini adventure. We called Student Development to help us out, and together, we spent nearly 15 minutes chasing Skylar around the green beehaven. She was having the time of her life, running in circles and playing with us as if it were all part of the game.

Eventually, we managed to catch her with the help of a treat—Skylar’s favorite incentive. Despite still being a young dog with all the playful tendencies of a puppy, Skylar’s spirited personality brings so much joy to the campus.

Even on days when she’s running wild and full of energy, it’s clear that Skylar is loved by everyone she meets. Her presence on Wednesdays has become a cherished tradition at KWU, and we can’t wait for many more exciting afternoons with her in the future.
