Kansas Through The Lens: Photo Exhibition

The exposure of visual arts is essential for cultural and personalized expression.  It is able to connect people of unique backgrounds by bringing forth emotion that simply can’t be done with words.  Kansas Wesleyan gives a spotlight to emerging and established artists in the creative community in the school’s art gallery.  A variety of works such as videography, painting, photography, sculpture, and more are put on display to be appreciated by, as well as inspire, students and members of the public.  

All artists are presenting their unique editing styles…

This time around Kansas Wesleyan’s Sam’s Hall of Fine Arts is hosting a photography exhibition, “Kansas Through the Lens”, highlighting many talented photographers from the Salina Photography Club with more than forty different pieces of work.  Each artist is showcasing their depictions of what makes Kansas the state that it is by capturing mesmerizing scenes of portraits, landscapes, and the spirit that encompasses them.  All artists are presenting their unique editing styles and photo techniques to represent a wide variety of diversity in the gallery.  

Featured Artist, Tanner Colvin

One of the featured artists, and KWU alumni, Tanner Colvin is representing himself with multiple pieces including those of wheatfields, buffalo, and a beautiful shot of the state capital building.  These can be found under the titles “Still Green”, “The Smiltalo”, and “The Capital”.  Tanner is an active member within Salina’s community that shoots a variety of different subject matter such as local college and high school sports, nature landscapes, and community events like the Smoky Hill River Festival and the BOOM! Festival.  He has a high understanding of whatever it may be that he shoots, coming into each series with an admirable patience and  willingness to get up close and personal to get the results he has sought out for.  

With this exhibition the opportunity has been presented to view and purchase digital prints of Tanner Colvin’s personal work that allow his distinctive skill and talents to shine through.  “It’s important to capture specific emotions and moments when shooting for events in order to attract or bring others in.  But when it comes to personal projects like landscape photography there’s a larger sense of freedom.”  Tanner believes that an artist produces their best work when given creative freedom and it shows after seeing the pieces he has provided for the gallery.  

Photography exhibition, Kansas Through the Lens, opened on August 19th and held its reception on August 30th in The Gallery where pieces were sold, but there are still plenty available for purchase.  The final day to view these amazing artists’ work will be September 19th.  Don’t miss out and stop by The Gallery on the first floor of Kansas Wesleyan’s Sam’s Hall of Fine Arts building.  Gallery hours are Monday-Friday from 9a.m.-7p.m.
