The Students Affected

The students affected by the fire are Mateo Hoyos and Andres Ruiz from Colombia, Gerardo Garcia from Mexico, and Sebastian Fernandez from Argentina. All four are student-athletes playing soccer at Kansas Wesleyan. Living far from home, they now face this crisis without the immediate support of family. “While we have each other, the emotional and financial burden of the events that occurred feels overwhelming,” they shared.

Lost Possessions and Ongoing Struggles

The fire destroyed many of the students’ essential items. For example, they lost textbooks, school supplies, and soccer gear. In addition, their clothing, toiletries, and electronics were damaged. As a result, the students now need help replacing these basic necessities to continue their studies and daily routines. “This fire has left us with many problems,” they explained. “We are asking for your help to get back on our feet.”

Request for Support

The students are facing several challenges, both personal and academic. They need new school supplies to keep up with their studies. Also, the costs of replacing their belongings are adding to their financial burden. To address this, they set up a GoFundMe campaign to seek financial help. “Your support will help us replace the basic necessities we need to continue our education and pay for any costs this accident may bring,” they said.

In response, the Kansas Wesleyan community has rallied around the students. Faculty, staff, and fellow students have offered temporary housing and essential supplies. Many understand how difficult it can be for international students to handle such a crisis alone. This support has been a crucial part of the students’ recovery.

How You Can Help

The GoFundMe page for the students has gained attention, and many have donated to help with expenses such as clothing, bedding, and school supplies. Some have even offered temporary housing. The students are grateful for the outpouring of support and are focusing on rebuilding their lives.

“This experience has shown us the power of community,” they said. “We appreciate every contribution and every message of support.”

Despite the challenges, the students remain determined to move forward. They continue to rely on the kindness of others to help them get back on their feet. Anyone interested in helping can donate to the GoFundMe campaign and offer their support.
