The Sandwich Factory Ep. 03 “You Can Tune a Piano, But You Can’t Tunafish”
Paul Green November 19, 2024
EVERYBODY EATS…
…and in this podcast, talking with your mouth full isn’t a faux pas.
Here, we examine the links between food and culture, examining how what we eat has the power to shape the destinies of individuals, cultures and nations. In other words, we’re one of those places that examines the “philosophy of food“.
Furthermore, each episode features a different meal. That is to say it will focus on a different intersection between food and culture. We examine this in our modern world, and throughout history.
IN THIS EPISODE…
…we explore the linkages between food and music. Studies have been done looking into the relationship between how quickly people eat depending on the kind of music being played in the background. Dr. Allen takes a look at how musicians have built a relationship between their art and how audiences interact with it based on the type of music they enjoy while eating. All that and more is up for discussion the show.
OUR GUESTS…
…Dr. Milt Allen, Chair of the Department of Music at Kansas Wesleyan University, and Heidi Jones – KWU Student and sandwich lover.
THE REPAST…
…is of course…the simple tuna fish sandwich. But this sandwich has an added special ingredient…bacon. Because it’s the one thing that can improve almost any sandwich. White albacore tuna, mayo, tomato and the aforementioned bacon all served up on artisan white bread. Served with a side of mixed green salad and shrimp cocktail, and for the beverage, Constant Comment hot tea. The desert was a pecan tart.
IN UPCOMING EPISODES…
In the future, we’ll examine other food and culture related ideas such as the concept of “comfort food”. Moreover, we’ll take a look at the British concept of “high tea” and what separates it from “low tea” when we take on the relationship between food and social class.
