Going Back Home – West Valley City, Utah

This is Edna Cruz. Cruz is from West Valley City, Utah, close to Salt Lake City, Utah! It is a 15-hour drive from her home to Kansas Wesleyan University. She is a freshman on the women’s soccer team, majoring in communication, and planning on adding a minor in sports management. With Cruz’s friends and family being so far away she hasn’t visited since coming to Kansas Wesleyan University. Even so, she knows that her family is just a phone call away if she ever needs anything.

While being here Cruz’s transition to college and her life away from home has been smooth. She has gotten used to her schedule with soccer and school which helped her through her adjustment here. Cruz mentions that she feels a purpose here in college in general. She states,” Having a sense of purpose of going to school and continuing to play soccer at a higher level for my brother and friends.” She feels grateful for the opportunity that Kansas Wesleyan has provided her and that is where she finds her motivation to work hard.

When Cruz is in her hometown town she mainly hangs out with her friends. She is the youngest and all her siblings are way older than her. But whenever she would hang out with her siblings it would be with her sisters to go to the movies. She was with her friends when she saw one of her favorite movies in theaters. Anyone But You. Cruz stated that the movie was, “ One of the best rom-coms I’ve seen in theaters!” She wasn’t alone in her opinion about the movie either. Another activity that she does with her friends is going to one of their houses, having a bonfire, and hanging out. Those memories are what keep her excited for the break.

Cruz isn’t going home for Thanksgiving break; it is just too short of a time for it to be worth traveling that distance. She is staying on campus while her other two roommates are going back to their homes. Mentioning that she just wants to have a break by herself to reset before finals come around. Although of course, she is more excited about Christmas Break! Not only to see her friends and family but to have a nice long month break away from school. Also, it is one of her favorite holidays!
