From Athlete to Coach: A Journey of Service and Strength

Written by on February 20, 2025

Tim Farina was named Kansas Wesleyan’s first-ever full-time Strength and Conditioning Coach in August 2024. His path to Salina, Kansas, was shaped by a mutual connection with Miguel Paredes, through Shelton Bynum at UConn. After flying down and interviewing, Tim found that the opportunity to build and staff a strength and conditioning department was a perfect fit.

A graduate of Becker College in Massachusetts, Tim was a four-time All-Conference offensive lineman (2012-2016) and went on to play professionally in France for a year. He also represented the USA in the 2016 World University Championship Games. His athletic background and experiences in football and international play fueled his passion for strength and conditioning, guiding him towards a career in coaching.

Before arriving at Kansas Wesleyan, Tim served as the Strength and Conditioning Coach at the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, from 2021. There, he worked with 19 NCAA Division III varsity teams and helped develop two national champions in track and wrestling. He also pioneered a power-based assessment to measure athlete fatigue, providing valuable data to improve performance.

Tim’s journey began in East Lyme, Connecticut, just a stone’s throw from the United States Coast Guard Academy. Growing up surrounded by military and athletic influences, including nearby bases like Camp Nett and Naval Submarine Base New London, he developed a passion for fitness and competition early on. These experiences, combined with his deep commitment to service, continue to drive his coaching philosophy.

“I strive to have a meaningful impact on my athletes’ lives,” Tim says. “My goal is not only to make them stronger, but also to help them become healthier, more resilient, and prepared for both their athletic careers and life beyond sports.”

In addition to coaching, Tim enjoys golfing with friends, fishing, and cheering on the sports teams at Kansas Wesleyan University. When asked who he’s rooting for in the Super Bowl, he proudly said, “The Eagles—I’m an East Coast boy for life!”

Tim’s journey is a testament to the power of combining athletic skill, leadership, and a dedication to service, as he continues to make an impact at Kansas Wesleyan University and beyond.
